Common Email Error Messages


Most of Email hosting server will have different codes and messages for its errors, this guide will provide explanation for common mail delivery failure messages.

Delivery error :
This is the most common error that every one may face at least once. It indicates that the emailaddress does not exist. Usually occurs because of a spelling error in the address of the recipient. Just check the address and try again.

Sender address rejected :
This dreadful message means that your address has been declared a spam or blacklist by the email hosting group that the recipient uses. The best approach is to contact the email host directly and ask to remove your name and address from blacklist.

Inbox full :
This error message indicates that the recipient has either reached the limit for the number of emails received during an allotted time frame or no longer has any inbox storage space remaining. The recipient will simply need to free up space so you can send the message.

Message exceeds maximum file size :
This means that your attached files are larger than the maximum allowed by the email server. Try to send the email without the attachment or reduce the file size.

Unknown host :
This message indicates any one of the following,
1) The domain name entered at the end of the email address
     spelled incorrectly.
2) The domain name no longer exists.
Check the full email address for accuracy. Or contact the recipient to validate that the email domain name.

Improper forwarding causing mail loop :
User may have two accounts, forwarding to each other, which creates an endless loop. A message sent a A is forwarded to B; if B is set to forward to A, then a mail loop is created: mail goes from A to the B back to A back to the B. And then message returned to its sender.

Mail not accepted :
This indicates that the recipient’s has been configured to restrict your email address, restrict anyone from your domain name to that email address.

Service unavailable :
This message generally indicates that the recipient’s email host is either not accepting email due to temporary volume issues or maintenance. Wait a few hours and then try sending the message again.
